When it comes to one-night stands, women appreciate the girth of a man’s penis, rather than its length. For longer term relationships, however, the fairer sex believe that length and girth are of equal importance, according to a leading study into women’s views on penis size.
The study, which was carried out by the UCLA Sexual Psychophysiology and Affective Neuroscience (SPAN) Laboratory in California, sampled 41 women about their preferences. The research involved 33 three model penises, ranging in length and width, created on a 3D printer, which the women were able to hold and view at close quarters.
The shortest penises were 4 inches long and 2.5 inches in circumference, with the largest being 8.5 inches long with a 7-inch girth.
From the selection, the women were asked which dimensions would be their favourite for a one-night stand and which would best suit them for a long-term relationship.
For the quick flings, on average, the sample of women went for models with a slightly larger girth than they would have chosen if they were with a steady partner.
Overall, the women’s preferred length of penis was about 6.5 inches. This turned out to be the same for both one-night stands and long-term relationships.
Research suggests a larger girth could increase likelihood of orgasm
The UCLA researchers said that their findings may be linked to the fact that the vagina comprises a number of pressure-sensitive nerve endings and these finely tuned sensors could detect variations in the girth of a penis. During sexual activity, it is thought that the presence of a larger girth helps bring the clitoris closer to the vagina, thus encouraging the likelihood of orgasm. At the same time, the research suggested that longer length penises could be linked to cervical pain.
Shannon Leung, a UCLA undergraduate in biology, who presented the findings to the Association for Psychological Science in San Francisco, said that whereas previous studies on penis size had relied solely on images of penises and had used potentially influential terminology, such as “small”, “medium” and “large”, this was the first time a study had involved 3D printing, so that the women could handle the models.
During one part of the study, the women were each given one of the penis models which they were asked to examine for 30 seconds. The models were then replaced in the bin with all the other 33 samples. After setting aside ten minutes to complete the survey and allowing sufficient time to pass, the women were asked to select exactly the same size model penis. Generally, they overestimated the size of penis they had been examining. This, according to Leung, could be a sign of reassurance for men feeling self-conscious about their size of penis.
